Nordic & Baltic Beauty
The next big thing in skincare comes from the North.
For decades, skincare trends came from Paris, New York and Seoul. On the shores of the Baltic Sea, a generation of small, independent makers has been building something quieter: certified, climate-tested formulas with ingredient lists you can actually read.
01
The climate
Made for the hardest season
In Tallinn, Helsinki and Riga, winter brings short days, temperatures well below freezing and wind straight off the sea. Indoors, the heating runs for months and the air turns dry.
Skincare made here has to cope with that. It is why northern formulas lean towards comfort: a gentle cleanse, a layer of hydration, and something richer at night.
02
The rules
Certified, not just “natural”
Every product in our edit is made in the EU, under cosmetics rules that prohibit more than 1,300 substances. Many Baltic makers go a step further and certify their formulas with COSMOS, audited by Ecocert, which checks where ingredients come from, how they're processed and how much is organic.
LUUV's Well-Aging Night Treatment, for example, is COSMOS Organic certified, with 99.8% of ingredients of natural origin according to the maker.

03
The plants
Botanicals that survive a hard season
The region's natural cosmetics have always used what grows nearby: sea buckthorn from the coastline, birch from the forests, wild berries, honey, plums and meadow flowers. Today's makers pair them with modern, well-understood ingredients like squalane, hyaluronic acid, bakuchiol and gentle PHAs.

04
The makers
Small labs, real families
LUUV was founded in 2017 in Tallinn as a family business and develops its formulas in-house. Alongside it, our edit includes independent makers from across Estonia, Finland and Latvia, most of them still small enough that the founders answer their own email.

The ritual
Sauna, slowness and a few good steps
Sauna is part of everyday life in Finland and Estonia: heat, cool down, rest, repeat. That idea of a calm, repeatable ritual carries into skincare. Not twelve steps. Three or four, done every evening.
- CleanseGentle cleanser, lukewarm water.
- TreatA few drops of bakuchiol serum.
- SealAn overnight cream-mask as your last step.
Why it's having its moment
- Tested by winterFormulas made for long, dark winters, cold Baltic wind and months of dry indoor heat. Comfort is the starting point, not an afterthought.
- Strict rulesMade under EU cosmetics law, which prohibits more than 1,300 substances in cosmetics. Many of our makers go further with COSMOS organic certification by Ecocert.
- Hardy botanicalsSea buckthorn from the coast, birch from the forest, honey, plum, rhubarb, linden. Plants that thrive in a short, intense northern summer.
- Small makersFamily-run labs in Estonia, Finland and Latvia that develop their own formulas. You won't find most of them in a department store yet.
